She was born in Brooksville on Feb. 21, 1923, the daughter of Morris H. and Minnie Lou (Grant) Chatto. She was educated in Brooksville schools and was a graduate of Farmington State Teachers College, now the U of M Farmington, where she majored in Home Economics. She married Philip A. Chase of Cumberland Center on June 30, 1950. Evelyn taught Home Economics in Ashland, where she also ran the hot lunch program and taught food preservation during World War II. She later taught Home Economics and coached the girls' basketball program in Waldoboro. She then came to Cumberland Center where she taught Home Economics at Greely Institute. Evelyn was an active member of the Tuttle Road Methodist Church where she served in many capacities, from the semi-annual meatball suppers and Christmas fair, to serving or chairing various committees and the Board of Trustees. She also taught Sunday school for many years and was a member and past president of the United Methodist Church Women. Her civic duty was also important to Evelyn and she served as Ballot Clerk for the Town of Cumberland and was a 30 years member of the Cumberland Cemetery Association. She was a Charter Member of the Cumberland Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and was a Red Network telephone operator for over ten years. She then was an assistant dispatcher for Cumberland, Chebeague Island and North Yarmouth for 15 years. Evelyn also devoted time to the local 4H club and was secretary of the Cumberland County 4H Leaders Association, herself being a club leader of the 'Busy Beavers' which featured sewing, cooking and food preservation. Evelyn served as a judge for the 4H exhibits held every year at the Cumberland Fair and the annual style dress review. She also chaperoned many functions and field Evelyn Chatto Chase Lindquist Funeral Home Funeral Home & Cremation Service 846-4011 trips, most memorably a trip to Washington, D.C. In all of this she found time to be a member of Bagaduce Chapter #173 of the Order of the Eastern Star and serve as secretary and president of the South Western Chapter of Farmington Alumni and the We Neighbors Club. Her favorite pastimes were working for the church and community affairs. She seldom said no to a request and always managed to find the time to take on a new project.
