Evelyn Oppenheim Carter, born Oct. 29, 1923, passed away peacefully at 2:30 p.m. June 22, 2012.Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2012, at Florence City Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Richard Gillespie officiating. Elkins Funeral Home is assisting the family. The family will receive family and friends at the Carter home, 470 Palisade Drive, beginning at 4 p.m. today.Evelyn was a graduate of Coffee High School and the University of Alabama, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta. She worked as a teacher and later as a librarian at TVA. She was a member of the Muscle Shoals District Service League and a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church.She is survived by her loving husband, Dr. John Jefferson Carter; three sons, Dr. John Jefferson Carter Jr., and his wife, Sherry of Tryon, N.C.; Thomas Vernon Carter and his wife, Ana, of Savannah, Ga.; Michael Fuller Carter and his wife, Shannon, of Florence; and daughter-in-law, Dixie Weatherford Carter, of Florence. She also is survived by her grandchildren, John Berry Carter, of Houston, Texas, Christopher Thomas Carter, of Savannah, Ga., and Maggie Carter, of Florence.The family appreciates the care and friendship offered by Deborah Darby.In lieu of flowers, because of her love for animals, especially her dog Yorkee, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Florence Animal Shelter Volunteer Program or First Presbyterian Church of Florence.Pallbearers will be James Megar, Linden Reeder, Goodloe Pride III, Dave Marbury, Preston Trousdale and Tom Frith.You are invited to sign the online guest registry at elkinsfh.com.
