Ethel Hazel Jackson passed away on July 5, 2013, at Flagler Hospital. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church. An accomplished musician, Mrs. Jackson served as music director, organist and pianist at St. Paul for 35 years. She was born in St. Augustine on April 21, 1931, the daughter of Tanzie and Lillian Hazel. She attended Excelsior School where her appreciation for and commitment to education began. She went on to study at Clark University, and Florida A&M University. She graduated from Florida Memorial College with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. Her dedication to the field of education led her to serve St. Johns County public schools as an elementary school teacher for 40 years during which time she was honored with the St. Johns County Teacher of the Year Award. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Lilla Mae Hazel Evans and Dorothy Hazel Smith.She has left to mourn her, a dedicated husband of 58 years, Mr. Bennie G. Jackson; nephews, Dr. Lance Smith and David Isaac Nelson; nieces, Bridgette (Loman Nelson) Smith, Briana (Jarrod) Thompson, Leah Noel Thompson, Michelle Anderson, Bridget Anderson and a host of other nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul A.M.E. at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2013 Friends may call at Chase Chapel from 6-8 p.m. on Friday. Burial at 11 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2013, at Jacksonville National CemeteryArrangements are by the Leo C. Chase & Son Funeral Home.
