->Ethel L. Davis Troy - Ethel L. Davis, 83, of Ridge Drive, died on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at her residence after a long illness. She was born in Raymer, Alabama on August 1, 1930 and was the daughter of the late Calvin and Loretta Zimmerman Ashley. Ethel was a graduate of Dunbar High School in Raymer and moved to Troy as a young woman. She was the beloved wife of the late L.C. Davis, who died Oct. 21, 1981. She retired from the Visiting Nurses Association in Troy after 40 years, dedicated to caring for the sick. She was the first African-American to be hired by the VNA. Ethel was a devoted member of the Marshal’s Department of the International Free and Accepted Modern Mason’s, Inc., the Order of the Eastern Star, joining Ethel Gamble #18, serving many offices including Worthy Matron. She was appointed Grand Youth Matron in 1980 for many years in Troy. Other departments she belonged to; Marshal Council as President until her death. Sister Davis loved the Marshal Department when there was a program or District Convention, she would lead that March-In. She also served as Lucille J. Smith Treasurer in 1994 for over 10 years. Queen of the South, Amaranth, Heroines of Jericho, Lady Knight, Royal Ladies, Isis, Sphinx, serving as Treasurer in many of these Departments. In 1976, Sister Davis was instrumental in establishing a new chapter, Sisters of Ruth #293 in Troy under the leadership of Sister Theresa Blankenship. Devoted mother of Keith (Maria) Gentry of Troy, Lorraine (Wilbert) Dancey of High Point, NC, Lillian Loretta (Scott) Whitely of Petersburgh, NY, Donald (Sandy) Gentry of Cohoes, John William Gentry of Baltimore, MD and Leonard Charles (Melanie) Davis of Troy; dear sister of Lois (Henry) Sankey of Troy and the late E.L. Mosley, Roosevelt Mosley, Vera Cargill, Perry Ashley and Bishop Calvin Ashley, Jr.; also survived by 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Home Going Celebration will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 2900 Fifth Avenue in Troy with the Rev. Charles U. Barber, Sr., Pastor-Teacher officiating. Calling hours held at the Church on Monday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Elmwood Hill Cemetery, Troy. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Rensselaer, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144, in memory of Ethel L. Davis.
