Mrs. Ethel Davis Dickinson Clarke Mrs. Ethel Davis Dickinson Clarke, age 89, died Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at Sterling House in Rock Hill, S.C., which had been her home for the last four years. She was born near Shiloh in Hopewell Township on Sept. 16, 1921. Ethel was the daughter of the late Benjamin Carll Davis and the late Phoebe Anna Bowden Davis. Ethel married Harmon Dickinson on June 11, 1941. While raising her family, she continued her education and received a Bachelor Degree from Salem College, Salem, W.Va., in 1956. As a pastorÕs wife, she served with her husband in Seventh Day Baptist churches in DeRuyter, N.Y.; Ashaway, RI; Denver, CO; Plainfield, NJ; and Richburg, NY. From 1954 -1957, while living in Denver, she worked for the Dean of the University of Denver. From 1980-87 they worked in the SDB denominational headquarters in Plainfield, NJ and Janesville, WI. Ethel retired in 1987 after serving as administrative assistant for the SDB General Conference. She also served on the Tract Society, Board of Christian Education and editor of the SDB Yearbook. In 1985 she was awarded the Robe of Achievement from the WomenÕs Society for the many years of contributions to the Seventh Day Baptist denomination. On August 5, 2000, at the age of 78, she married David Clarke. David and Harmon had been seminary classmates. Ethel was a member of the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Daytona Beach, Fla., and an associate member of Unity Presbyterian Church in Fort Mill, S.C. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Rev. C. Harmon Dickinson and then by her second husband, Rev. David S. Clarke. Surviving are two sons, Alfred H. Dickinson of Schenectady, N.Y., and Mervin J. Dickinson of Franklin Park, N.J.; her daughter, Loisanna D. Edwards of Fort Mill, S.C.; 9 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five stepchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; and 3 step-great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at the Seventh Day Baptist Church of Shiloh, East Avenue in Shiloh on Sunday, March 6, at 2 oÕclock where friends will be received from 1 until 2. The Rev. Dr. Dale Thorngate will officiate. The interment will follow the service and will take place in the church cemetery. A memorial service will be held in Fort Mill, S.C., at the Unity Presbyterian Church on Wednesday morning, March 9, at 11 oÕclock with the Rev. Dan Holloway and the Rev. Jeannie Bickett officiating.
