Smith, Esther M. ALBANY Esther Mae Smith, age 103, was born into eternal life Thursday, September 15, 2011. Born July 1, 1908 in West Orange, N.J., she was the daughter of the late David and Annabelle Hayter MacFarquhar. Esther was a cake decorator for Freihofer's Bakery for many years. Besides creating beautiful cakes, she enjoyed painting ceramics and knitting, sharing her talents in the form of gorgeous sweaters, quilts, ceramic garden ornaments and special birthday and wedding cakes with her family throughout the years. After retiring, she moved to Florida for 38 years before returning to the Capital District. Esther was a woman of great faith. She truly believed that the secret to a long life was a strong belief in God, hard work, and selfless acts of kindness. Esther's deep, unconditional and all-enveloping love for her family will sustain and comfort them for the rest of their lives. Beloved wife of the late William MacDonald and the late Benjamin Smith; loving mother of Alton (Joan) MacDonald Sr. of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Esther Bustard of Altamont, the late Francis MacDonald and the late William MacDonald Jr. She is also survived by her 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. A service of memory will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, September 24, 2011 at St. John's Lutheran Church Chapel, 303 Sand Creek Rd., Colonie. Inurnment will follow in Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands.
