1935 - 2015Ernestine Rose Davis died peacefully in her sleep at 6pm Friday, January 2nd, 2015 at Calvary Hospital, 1740 Eastchester Road, Bronx, NY 10451 where she was admitted for hospice care on December 23rd, 2014. Prior to this, she was being treated for lung cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, New York, NY for the past year. She was 79 years old.Ernestine was born on June 22nd, 1935 at Newark City Hospital, Newark, NJ to Ernest Davis and Bettie Lou Brown. Her parents passed away within a year and a half of each other in the early 1970's. She had one older sister Imogene Seola Davis also born in Newark on November 24th, 1929 who married Julian Gittens. Ernestine was raised in NYC and earned a high school diploma and a City College of New York B.S. Degree in NYC. She worked as a medical laboratory technologist or microbiologist for most of her life and was licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in New York State. She had 50 years' experience at Bellevue Hospital Center and the Manhattan VA Hospital and more than a decade of experience in hospitals in Florence, South Carolina.Ernestine married Ronald Thibou (Sr.) on January 16th, 1960 and bore Ronald Jr. on May 13th, 1965. They were married for 17 years. They divorced in 1977. Ronald Thibou (Sr.) recently passed away in April 2014. Although Ernestine was born and raised in urban areas, she grew fond of her experiences in less urban areas and decided she needed a change for herself and her son after her divorce. She moved to South Carolina in 1979. Ernestine met Leroy Kelly, a native of Florence, SC living in mostly in Brooklyn at the time, who helped her transition to life in Florence and would become her next and last husband. She resided in Florence for many years while her son attended high school and college. When Leroy Kelly became ill during a stay in NYC and died unexpectedly in 1993, she gravitated back to residing in NYC, although she continued to travel back to the South often for the remainder of her years.Ernestine enjoyed traveling, socializing with good friends, exercise classes, volunteering in the community, and in her later years singing in a choir. She had been a Board Member of the Bronx Community Health Network, Inc. since 2006 and was active with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. During many of her later years, she participated in the Concourse Village Outreach program and Senior Center. She was also a member of Community Board 4 and the Jackson Democratic Club. She was a member of the Canaan Baptist Church of Chirst, New York, NY for many of her senior years. Ernestine is survived by her son Ronald Thibou, Jr., her sister Imogene Gittens-Davis and a host of loving friends and more distant relatives.
