Mrs. Emma Frances Summers Anderson, 96, Florence, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, after a brief illness.Mrs. Anderson was born in Leighton, Ala., and moved to Sheffield at an early age. She has lived in Florence since 1948. She graduated from Sheffield High School and Florence Normal College (now the University of North Alabama), taught school in Colbert County and worked at the Sheffield Post Office during World War II. She served as dietician at Florence State College from 1952 until 1961. She served as a Red Cross volunteer for five years at Mitchell-Hollingsworth Nursing Home and was a member of the Florence 20th Century Club.She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Florence, having served in the past as a teacher, Training Union director, choir member and a Womans Missionary Union leader.She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Phil Anderson, her parents, two brothers, three sisters and one great-granddaughter.The funeral service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Florence, with the Rev. Larry Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Sheffield Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church Friday from noon until service time. Elkins Funeral Home is assisting the family.Mrs. Anderson is survived by a daughter, Sara Smith and her husband, R.C., Muscle Shoals; a son, Phillip M. Anderson and his wife, Martha, Florence; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Phillip Anderson Jr., Leland Anderson, William Anderson, Steve Anderson, Rick Snider (husband of Rachel Anderson Snider) and Tim Ray.The deacons of First Baptist Church, Florence, will serve as honorary pallbearers.Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of First Baptist Church of Florence.The family would like to thank Dr. Bartmess, Dr. Nichols and the nursing staff at ECM Hospital for their compassionate care.
