SMITH Emily Wynn Waldruff Smith passed away Monday March 10 with God's quarter moon smiling on her to rejoin her husband William Carr in heaven, with her much loved son-in-law David Hammond holding her hand. Mom was born September 29, 1915 in Chrisman, Illinois, "the biggest little town in Edgar County". She leaves four thankful and devoted children, Jeanne Hammond and Carr Smith of Jacksonville, Bryan Smith of Auburn GA, and Gary Smith of Wheeling, IL; 10 grandchildren, all wonderful, of course, and numerous nieces and nephews. She grew up during the Depression, met William Carr in Virginia Beach when he had a three-day pass, and married in 1942, just before he shipped off to WWII, never knowing whether he would come home alive. They had a whirlwind courtship and a loving and devoted marriage of 35 years before he passed away in 1977. Emily was a stenographer for the then Chicago Surface Lines (the good old streetcars of Chicago) in the late 30's and '40's. Later she worked as a secretary for U.S. Steel Supply in Chicago, and also ran the Meals On Wheels program in Calumet City IL. She was an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church U.S.A., but first and foremost she was and is our Mother. She was never angry and always took the lumps life dishes out with grace. She will always be an example to her children. A graveside memorial service and burial will be on a hillside in Virginia, looking up to the Blue Ridge, next to her loving husband. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida or to Taylor Home.
