Elwood W. Miller AVA Elwood W. Miller, 94, a life resident of State Rt. 26, Town of Ava, and husband of Pauline, passed away on January 27, 2014, at Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Boonville, after a long illness. Elwood was born on January 27, 1920, a son of Walter G. and Nellie Still Miller, on the Miller Homestead Farm, known as the Maple Grove Stock Farm, which was founded by his family, in 1900, on Rt. 26, north of Ava Corners. He graduated from West Leyden Central School, with the Class of 1938. In February, 1943, Mr. Miller entered the U.S. Army, serving in a trucking regiment which conveyed military supplies over the Lido Road between India and China. On December 24, 1945, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. In 1949, Mr. Miller began his long career as a Railway Mail Clerk, starting at the mail handling facility at Central Terminal in Buffalo, first on the extra board from Albany to Buffalo, on the New York Central, before his promotion to regular clerk from Buffalo to Chicago, retiring in 1972, from the U.S. Post Office in Utica. After his retirement as a postal clerk, Elwood was employed as a grounds crew at the Rome Developmental Center and, for many years, he enjoyed employment cutting logs in his wood lot near Ava. On November 22, 1950, Mr. Miller was united in marriage with the love of his life, Pauline L. Brando. This was a blessed union that lasted for nearly 64 years. He was a member of the Reformed Church of West Leyden, the Charles J. Love Post #406, American Legion, Boonville, and a former secretary and treasurer of Ava Sand Hill Cemetery. In addition to his wife, Pauline, Ellwood is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas P. and Cheryl Miller, North Western; three grandchildren, Jamie, David and Roxanne; and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Kathleen Chadwick, in 2005. His funeral service will be Saturday at 1:00 PM at Trainor Funeral Home, Inc., 143 Schuyler St., Boonville, with interment in the spring in Ava Cemetery, where members of Charles J. Love Post American Legion, Harland J. Hennessey Post V.F.W. and Tun Tavern Marine Corps League will render Military Rites. Calling hours are Friday, 4-8 PM, at the funeral home.
