AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mrs. Elsie Jane Fleming Mathews, 100, entered into rest on Thursday August 16, 2007 at Brandon Wilde. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday August 20, 2007 at Westover Memorial Park with the Rev. Michael Riddle officiating. Mrs. Mathews was born December 14, 1906 in Chattanooga, TN. She attended Normal Park Grammar School and Chattanooga High School before earning her General Science Degree from the University of Chattanooga. She went on to teach general science for 9 years at Central High School in Chattanooga. She married George W. Mathews, Sr. in 1936, and they moved to Augusta where they built a home. Mr. Mathews died in 1988. Mrs. Mathews was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church and the Trinity Bible Class. She is survived by a sister, Gail McDonald of Evans, a stepson, Dr. George W. Mathews, Jr., and his wife, Jane, three step grandchildren, George W. Mathews III and wife, Krista, Laura Leigh Mathews, and Barbara Jan Bigda, three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
