ELSIE EMMA MONTGOMERY JOHNSON Oct. 17, 1920 - March 16, 2008 Elsie Johnson was born in Summerhill, NY, to Ruth Dickinson and Lynn Montgomery. She attended a rural school in Summerhill and graduated from Groton High School in 1939 and Cortland State University in 1943. For nearly twenty years she taught elementary school in Cortland's Barry School. In 1944, Elsie married James Johnson, who predeceased her in 2003. Their large family included Thomas (Sandra), Judy (David) Brooks, Janice (Brian) Wormington, Alice (Mark) Goldfarb, and William (Nina); plus nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Elsie was active in the Groton City Church, was a past matron of Groton Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Groton Fortnightly Club. She and Jimmy loved traveling with local senior citizen groups. She will always be an avid Yankees fan. We will miss her very much. Calling hours will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday at Zirbel Funeral Home, 115 Williams St., Groton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday at Groton City Church.
