Ellen Jane Howe Smith Rome Ellen Jane Howe Smith, 76, of Rome, passed away Friday, October 17, 2008, at Rome Memorial Hospital, with her family at her side. She was born November 13, 1931, in Rome, a daughter of Clifford Wheeler Howe and Loretta McConnell Howe. Ellen was united in marriage to Donald James Smith on July 11, 1953. Ellen is survived by her husband, Donald; three sons, David and Karla Smith, of Garland, TX, Stephen and Mickey Smith, of Utica, and Thomas and Nancy Smith, of Rochester; and eight grandchildren, Kelly and her husband, Trevor, Robert and his wife, Carissa, Mark, Melissa, Alec, Emily, Abigail and Trevor Smith. She was predeceased by her sister, Jeanne Howe Campbell. Ellen was educated in Rome schools, at the Academy of the Holy Names and Rome Free Academy. She received a BA Degree from Vassar College in 1953. Ellen was a nursery school teacher for more than 15 years at the First Presbyterian Church Nursery School in Rome. She was an active volunteer at Jervis Public Library for many years, and she enjoyed volunteering for many other community service organizations throughout the years. The family would like to thank the staff at Rome Memorial Hospital for the loving care they showed to Ellen. A memorial service will be held at Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, on Tuesday at 2:00 PM. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please remember the Jervis Public Library.
