December 27, 2007 Ellen C. Casey, 99, died peacefully Thursday at Community Hospital, two days after seeing her 100th Christmas. Ellen was born October 1, 1908, the daughter of Catherine Leahey Brown and Martin Brown. She was a teacher in the Syracuse City School District for 36 years, teaching many grade levels before retiring from Fraser School in 1970. Ellen thoroughly enjoyed her childhood on Tipperary Hill, growing up with many cousins. She loved spending time each summer in the Adirondacks from childhood until she was 90 years old and instilled a love of the Adirondacks in her children and grandchildren. She leaves them many wonderful memories. Ellen was predeceased by her husband, William, in 2001 and by her brother, Philip. Ellen is survived by daughter Maureen (Frederick) Straub; son Dr. William (Mary) Casey of Williamsville; grandchildren Kathleen (Anthony) Viola, William (Dr. Lori) Straub, Daniel (Sasha) Straub, Matthew (Stephanie) Straub, Ted (Stephanie) Straub, Dr. Patrick (Sarah) Casey, and Elizabeth and Christopher Casey; great-grandchildren Analiese Straub, Corinthia Viola and William Straub; one niece; and two nephews. Services will be 9 a.m. Monday at Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave., and 9:30 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church. Calling hours will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
