ELLA CARPENTER (PORCH) VALPARAISO, IN Ella (Porch) Carpenter, 94 of Valparaiso, passed away Sunday, December 12, 2010. Ella was born December 10, 1916 in Michigan City, IN to William and Sarah (Smith) Porch. She attended schools in Porter County, mostly in Washington and Center Townships. Ella married George Eugene Carpenter, Jr. on September 27, 1936 at her parent's home in Valparaiso. They lived in the Valparaiso area until moving to Jackson Township in 1946. After the death of George in 1982, she lived there until 1992, then she moved to Valparaiso. Ella is survived by one son Gene (Jan) Carpenter of The Villages, FL; three daughters: Ruth Hegburg of Chesterton, Karon (Mike) Benson of Valparaiso and Debbie (William) Spencer of Pleasant Valley, NY; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; one sister, Edith Johnson; and two brothers: Ross Porch and Harold Porch. Ella was employed by Porter Memorial Hospital in the housekeeping department for many years. She and her husband hand loomed rugs that were popular attractions at craft shows in the area in the 1970's. Ella was a charter member of Banta Senior Center which she attended regularly until age 91 in 2007. She enjoyed taking part in the craft projects and was an avid and regular card player. Ella was also a member of a square dance group at Banta which she enjoyed very much. She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Valparaiso. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at 10:30 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 3401 N. Valparaiso Street, Valparaiso, IN with Pastor Wayne Rhoads officiating. Burial took place in Kimball Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Banta Center, 605 Beech St., Valparaiso, IN 46383.
