WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. Elizabeth Wheeler Stewart, age 91, went peacefully to be with her Lord on April 6, 2010, at her home in West Palm Beach, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Wilson Stewart, her parents John T. Wheeler and Sarah Elizabeth Glass Wheeler, and siblings James Tilman Wheeler, John T. Wheeler, Frances Wheeler Tyler, and William H. Wheeler. Survivors include her brother Robert L. Wheeler of Tuscaloosa, sons Horace Wheeler Stewart (Sherri) of Royal Palm Beach, Fla. and Robert Cecil Stewart (Lida) of Birmingham, and grandchildren Lee Wheeler Stewart of Richmond, Va., Jonathan Beaumont Stewart and Elisabeth Sarah Stewart of Birmingham.Elizabeth was born in Montgomery County and graduated from Shades Cahaba High School in Homewood. She earned a B.S. in Home Economics from Auburn University in 1941, where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority and an editor of the Glomerata yearbook. She served as assistant home demonstration agent for Calhoun County, until she was named extension home agent for Tuscaloosa County in 1961. She earned an M.S. in Home Economics from the University of Alabama in 1967. She received numerous awards from the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service and was named a life member of the Auburn Alumni Association in 1987. After retirement in 1981, Elizabeth devoted much of her time to her longtime church, Forest Lake Baptist of Tuscaloosa. A woman of deep faith, she taught adult Sunday school for over twenty years. She was also very active with several genealogical organizations, including the Daughters of the American Colonists, the National Society of Colonial Dames, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed attending Auburn football games with her husband, Carl, as well as traveling to Europe and around the United States with friends and family. She relocated to West Palm Beach in 2001, where she remained close with her two sons, Wheeler and Bob.A memorial celebration of her life will be held at Forest Lake Baptist on Wednesday, April 14, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will follow at the Munford Memorial Cemetery in Talladega County at 3:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
