WILSON, Elizabeth (Betty) 1923 - 2005 Elizabeth passed away at her Nanaimo home on December 11, 2005. She was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, to Dorothy and Dave Burns, and grew up in Grassy Lake. Dry-land farming was difficult in the 1920's and 30's, so Elizabeth raised lambs to pay for her high school education. After a short term of Normal School, Elizabeth was hired as a one-room school teacher at James River Bridge, Alberta, the first of many teaching positions. She married Don Wilson in 1949, and they lived in Edmonton until Don retired, in 1987, at which time they moved to Nanaimo. For her first novel, Andre Tom Macgregor, she was awarded the Search-for-a-New-Alberta-Novelist prize and the Beaver Award (1976). She continued to write and publish novels (The Book of Sarah, and Song Dogs), along with short stories and poems. Two other novels were nearing completion. Elizabeth was a citizen of the world, a perpetual student of people and events, and a proud Canadian. She was awed by the beauty of all things wild, and carefully observed the changing moods of storms, seasons, and biological phenomena. She was political, held thoughtful opinions, and pursued practical wisdom. She was a mentor and role model for many. A generous and compassionate person, Elizabeth had great empathy for all who struggled to deal with life's challenges. An avid reader, an author, poet, theatrical director, classical guitarist, and knitter, she was the recipient of many awards from publishing houses, governments, and community groups. In 2003, she was a proud graduate of Malaspina University College, earning a B.A. in Creative Writing with Distinction. Her friends were a vital and nourishing part of her life. Elizabeth was pre-deceased by her husband Don and sons, Andrew and David. She was very much loved by her family and friends from across the country and around the world. She will be missed. A Celebration of her life will be held in Nanaimo, on February 17, 2006. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elizabeth's name to Knowledge Network (1-877-456-6988).
