BARRE - Elizabeth (Betty) Johnson, 93, of Barre, died Dec. 21, 2010, at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin. She was born Dec. 17, 1917, in Litchfield, Conn., the daughter of Leroy and Lena (Morse) Sanford. She graduated from Litchfield High School and from Bryant Business School in Providence, R.I. After graduation she worked for the state of Connecticut. On Oct. 11, 1940, she married Ellis N. Johnson of Stowe. They settled on a farm in Middlesex, moved to Moretown for a short time and in 1948, moved to Barre where for 33 years Betty managed her husband's Nationwide Insurance office on Washington Street. After retiring from Nationwide, they spent their summers on Lake Elmore and wintered in Sebring, Fla., until her husband's death in 2001. The past few years, Betty resided at the Gingras Community Care Home in Barre. As a young girl, Betty was very active in 4-H and enjoyed entering and winning prizes for her baked goods at local fairs. Betty was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Barre, singing in the choir for many years and was a member of the Women's Alliance Group. She was very active with the youth of the church while her children were growing up. Betty always made visitors to their home feel very welcomed. Their door was always open to their friends and strangers to come in and share a meal. Betty assisted her husband with Troop 1 of the Boy Scouts at the First Baptist Church. Before acquiring their summer cottage on Lake Elmore, Betty would, at a moment's notice, drop everything to enjoy a camping trip with her family, sleeping under the stars. In the years to come, many fond memories were made with family and friends at their camp on Lake Elmore. She particularly enjoyed having her grandchildren spend time with them at the lake during summer vacations. Betty is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Ed Waters of Washington; son and daughter-in-law, Sanford and Judy Johnson of Orange; four grandchildren, Shelley (Johnson) Moulton and husband Michael, of Attleboro, Mass., Matthew Johnson of Wellington, Fla., Tara (Johnson) McDevitt and husband Charles, of Billerica, Mass., Melissa (Johnson) Rock and husband Jamey of Orange; six great-grandsons, Troy and Trevor Moulton, Connor and Caleb McDevitt, Brody and Hayden Rock, and many nieces and nephews in Connecticut and Vermont. In addition to her parents and husband, Betty is predeceased by her sister Isabelle Carlson, a brother, Clarence Sanford and a son, Bruce. There will be no calling hours. A Memorial service will be held at a future time. Contributions in her memory may be made to the First Baptist Church, 24 Washington St., Barre, VT 05641 or to Woodridge Nursing Home, P.O. Box 550, Barre, VT 05641.
