MURRAY--Elizabeth. The Trustees and staff of The Museum of Modern Art mourn the loss of Elizabeth Murray. Her retrospective exhibition at The Museum in 2006 brought to a wide public the extraordinary pleasure of her maverick and exuberant paintings. Murray's courage in dedicating herself in the 1970s to the then-unfashionable pursuit of painting, and her ingenious exploration of the medium over the course of more than three decades resulted in a body of work that never ceased to surprise and enlighten. We will remember Murray not only for the beauty, humor, and wisdom of her work, but also as an enormously generous friend, mentor, and colleague of inspiring warmth and vitality whose courage in fighting cancer was an inspiration for all of us.
