MILLER-It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Elizabeth Bertha Miller (nee Mang) on July 19, 2007 at the age of 81 years. Bertha was born on June 29, 1926, the eight child and third daughter of Katharina and Jacob Mang in the Gravelbourg district, SK. Tragically, at the age of three, Bertha lost her mother and moved with two young sisters to live with her paternal grandmother on the family farm near Edenwold. At age six she returned to her father's farm and spent her young days assisting her father and stepmother with farm chores, from milking cows to building a road, and helping care for her young sisters and brother. As a teenager, Bertha returned to her Grandmother's farm for a couple of years, helping her grandmother tend to the dairy herd, sheep, cattle and crops. She loved horses and regaled us with stories of the horses she worked with and rode -Beauty, Nell, King, Fly and Nobel to name a few. Bertha later moved to Regina where she found work as a waitress before she married her first husband George Janz in 1947. George died suddenly in 1961 leaving Bertha with a young family of five children to raise on her own. Like every challenge she encountered in her life, Bertha faced this loss with dignity and courage. She was single parenting long before society acknowledged this as work. Bertha taught her children many things, to care for others, to laugh, to ride a bike, to play baseball, to love music and to value friends. Throughout the years, she retained her love of the prairies, the crocuses, lilacs, meadowlarks, wheat fields and rolling hills. Despite the hardships, she always found a way to smile and delight in life. In 1963, Bertha married Myles Miller, originally from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia; together they built a new life for themselves and their family. She began working at the University of Regina in 1969, until her retirement. She loved sports, especially baseball. She bowled for many years with the Bowlorama Belles. She was predeceased by her mother Katharina; father Jacob; stepmother Bertha; brothers Arthur, Frederick, Erich, Moritz and Bill and sister Frieda. Bertha is lovingly remembered by her husband Myles; her children Diana (Jim) Workman of Arcola, SK, Earl (Paulette) Janz of Regina, Sandra Janz (Christopher Reed) of Toronto, Karen (Orest) Schiller of Regina, Trish Janz of Calgary and Donovan Miller of Calgary; grandchildren Travis and Claire Schiller, Geordan and Nathan Workman and Alana Mitschke; great grandson Cameron Seghers; brother Rudolph Mang; sisters Carol (Walter) Dick, Adeline (Albert) Knoblauch, Doris (George) Hungle, Terry (Otto) Rotheisler, Martha Bernt, Evelyn (Brian) Rumple and Tema (Bud) Fenson; sisters-in-law Mary Butts and Willena (Lorne) Herndier of Neudorf, SK, Eva Janz and Beatrice Mang of Regina; and many more dear sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cherished friends and neighbours. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at Regina Funeral Home, Hwy #1 East, Regina, SK on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. Interment and reception to follow. Flowers most gratefully declined, friends so wishing may make donations in Bertha's memory to a charity of one's choice. The family would like to thank all the nurses and home health aid workers of the Palliative Care Unit, Allan Blair Cancer Centre, Pasqua Hospital for their kindness and support. Family and friends are invited to sign a book of condolences online at www.regina-memorial.ca . Arrangements are entrusted to
