Elizabeth Jones Carter, age 82, died on Friday, May 15, 2010, at Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Plainfield, followed by the interment at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains, N.J. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Higgins Home for Funerals, 209 W. 8th St., Plainfield, N.J. To send condolences, please visit www.higginsfuneralhome.com. Mrs. Carter was born in Cameron, S.C., and had been a longtime resident of Plainfield until her retirement in 1994. She had received a bachelor's degree from West Virginia State and later earned her master's in education from Kean College. She was a charter member of the Theta Phi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Mrs. Carter began her teaching career at the Campbell School in Metuchen, where she was the first African American teacher in that school system. She taught in the Plainfield school system for over 30 years at the Woodland and Maxson schools. Mrs. Carter loved reading, especially mystery novels, and also enjoyed gardening. Her brother, Boston Jones, predeceased her in 1998. She is survived by a son, Charles T. Carter Jr. and his wife, Deborah; a daughter, Margaret Farinella and her husband, Ted; four sisters, Abigail Hardy, Marian Roberts, Mary Armstrong and Marie Lattimore. She is also survived by one grandchild, Charlie Farinella.
