-> Elizabeth Jo Wilson, died Monday, July 28, 2003 at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport, Michigan, from complications following a car accident in Savannah, on June 14, 2003. Jo was born November 29, 1913 in Belton, Texas, the daughter of Lola Oda and Davis Doyle. She attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College, and graduated with a teaching degree from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX in 1933. In 1938, she married Leland Wilson. Jo was a teacher for 45 years, first in elementary school and later specializing in special education for orthopedically handicapped children and for children with learning disorders. She worked at several schools including the Capper Foundation in Topeka and the Central Kansas Co-op in Education in Salina. She also taught at the Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. She lived in Wichita in the 1940s and in the Manhattan area from 1949 to 1957. From 1957 to 1981, she lived in Topeka, Lawrence and Salina, until her retirement from teaching. At the age of 67, she entered the Peace Corps. She served for three years in Tunisia, where she established an orphanage for handicapped children and then served for three years in Barbados, working with teachers and children in a school for handicapped children. Jo returned to Topeka in 1987 where she lived until 1994. Jo spent the last 10 years of her life in Savannah. In addition to her professional career, and raising six children, Jo was active in the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Topeka, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Savannah, and theAmerican Association of University Women. She was a docent for Telfair Museum in Savannah and a volunteer for the Owens-Thomas House. She played and taught piano and was an accomplished classical pianist. Jo was an adventurer, and traveled the world extensively, always visiting art museums where ever she went. She was a friend to nearly everyone she encountered throughout her life. With Jo, it was easy to feel that you were a very important person. She had a great gift for seeing and communicating each persons best qualities. She took a special interest in everyone, not just in her life, but also in those who touched the lives of her family. Some of these people became "adopted" family members. Jo was also known for her remarkable memory for details about people, places and experiences, far beyond the ability of others much younger than she.
