Avis de décès de Elizabeth-Hovey Johnson

Elizabeth Hovey Johnson, 94 1915 - 2009 FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Elizabeth Hovey Johnson, 94, of Fort Myers, Fla., and formerly of Maine, Windham Hill, Cumberland Foreside, and South Freeport, passed away on Dec. 9, 2009, with her son Fred at her side. Elizabeth (known as Liz) was born in Oak Park, Ill., on Jan. 22, 1915, to Frederick Burling and Adele Seifried Hovey. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her brother, Frederick Burling Hovey Jr. She attended local schools and then, during the Great Depression, she ventured west to Palo Alto, Calif., and Stanford University where she earned her bachelor's degree cum laude. Soon afterward in 1937 she married George Burnham Morrill Jr. of Portland and traveled across the country to the east coast where they settled and created their family on Windham Hill. There they raised George Burnham Morrill III (deceased), Bonnie Morrill Fox of Freeport, Calista Elizabeth Morrill of Lyons, Colo., and Frederick Hovey Morrill of Tenants Harbor, until the family moved to Cumberland Foreside. Liz later married Howard Cooper Johnson Jr. who had served with the Department of State as Director of the United Nations Planning Staff and pursued a career in banking that included service with the World Bank. Liz and Howard enjoyed their retirement in South Freeport where they shared their love of sailing, golfing, traveling, and entertaining many cherished friends in the community. Liz was a lifelong avid gardener, beginning when she helped her mother as a child in suburban Chicago. Her children remember her World War II Victory Garden (mostly vegetables) and subsequent colorful flower gardens wherever she lived, including Shell Point Village in Fort Myers, Fla. Liz served her communities in a number of quiet ways - with the Junior League and United Fund of Portland, the Clothes Tree in Freeport, and the Democratic Women's Club of Fort Myers. She also supported the World Federalists (Liz took heart that Walter Cronkite was a member), now the World Federalist Institute of Citizens for Global Solutions. Her children fondly remember gazing upon a small blue and white sticker glued to the side of a chest of drawers in front of the 'john' that said 'War is not the answer.' World War I, World War II, and the Vietnam War had affected members of her family. Over her lifetime Liz excelled in a wide array of domestic skills, from sewing, knitting, needlepoint, to her superb cooking which her children remember as unsurpassed by anyone else. Liz inspired in her family a love and devotion to animals, most especially Golden Retrievers. A theme that her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will remember clearly is Tutu's (Hawaiian for Grandmother) encouragement to do well in school, pursue their education, and read. Books and reading were a vital source of mental life for herself and her gifts to her family. Her grandchildren are Stephen G. Morrill of Portland, Michael M. Morrill of New York City, Jonathan H. Morrill of Portland, Michael W. Fox Jr. of San Francisco and Camilla H. Fox of Larkspur, Calif. Her great-grandchildren are Sarah Morrill of Portland and Tucker Morrill and Silas Morrill of New York City. A memorial service was held at Shell Point Village on Dec. 13, 2009. Interment will be a later private family ceremony at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland. If desired, donations in her memory may be made to: All Faiths Unitarian Congregation Building Fund P.O. Box 07477 Fort Myers, Florida 33919
