GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- Elizabeth W. Carpenter, 84, died on Thursday, March 18, 2004.She was born on May 13, 1919, in Corning, N.Y., to the former Court Justice John C. Wheeler and Martha Morgan Wheeler. After primary education, she graduated from Smith College in Northampton, Mass.She married Peter Carpenter on June 6, 1941. The young couple moved to Mystic, Conn., after her husband returned from service in World War II. Her active life consisted mostly of beaches, boating, bridge, badminton, big bands and most importantly, golf. An avid golfer at Pequot Golf Course in Stonington, Conn., she won many tournaments over the years and also organized the Shoreline Summer League, a ladies golf competition of participating country clubs in southeastern Connecticut. She had a lifelong love of music and was active in choral and choir ensemble. Among her favorites were Smith Glee Club, Mystic Choral Group and Mystic Seaport Carolers. Part of every summer was spent vacationing in the family cottage on Keuka Lake in upstate New York.She moved to her new home on the Fountains Campus in Colorado in October 2000 and fashioned a new life for herself making many friends, organizing bridge games, enjoying her family and the beautiful western weather.She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter, and a son, Richard. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Mahoney and Elizabeth “Libby” Kunz of Guilford, Vt.FUNERAL NOTICE -- Elizabeth W. Carpenter, 84, of Grand Junction, Colo., died on Thursday, March 18, 2004.She is also survived by her sons-in-law Brian Mahoney and William Kunz of Guilford, Vt.; granddaughter, Lauren Ambrozic and husband, Paul, their children, Alexandra and Sophia; grandson, Peter Mahoney and wife, Nancy, their children, Brynn, Anna and Gabriel; granddaughter, Melissa Stevens and husband, Jonathan; grandson, David Kunz and wife, Brandy, their children, Treelyn and Jakob; and granddaughter, Sarah Kunz, and her best friend and caregiver, Karen Frost; loving nieces and nephews; and friends.At her request, cremation has taken place. Family and friends will gather in Penn Yan, N.Y., to bury her ashes on a hillside cemetery overlooking Keuka Lake and the site across the lake of the family's former winery, Empire State Champagne.Arrangements for a memorial service are pending.
