Elizabeth Betty Jane Smith, 86 OAKLAND - Elizabeth Betty Jane Smith, 86, of Oakland, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2008 at Maine General Hospital, Thayer Unit, Waterville. Betty was born Dec.16, 1921 in Albuquerque, N.M., to Charles and Yvonne Jane (Burton) Vernon. She graduated Classen High School in Oklahoma City in 1939 and attended the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Okla., from 1939 - 1941. Betty's greatest love was her family and she enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all her nieces and nephews. She was an artist in every sense of the word and enjoyed painting, especially Tole style plaques, collecting miniature furniture and creating shadow boxes. Betty enjoyed the serenity of her garden and was an avid reader. Betty unselfishly gave to the community her energy as a hostess of the USO where she met her husband. She served as a hospital volunteer, was a past secretary of the American Legion Auxiliary, Girl Scout leader, and past president of the Camden Women's Club. Betty was a member and did the costuming at the Camden Historical/Conway House in Camden. She also devoted many hours to the Oakland Historical Society and especially enjoyed working with the members. Betty was loved and will be sadly missed by her husband of 63 years Cdr. Raymond D. Smith; children Jane (Russell) Campbell of Thomaston, Raymond Dexter (Donna) Smith of Canaan, Diana Smith of Augusta, David (Hortensia) Smith of El Paso, Texas, Sarah Nadeau of Las Vegas, Nev., daughter-in-law Aleksandra Sirovica Smith of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren Heather (Matthew) Brett, Dorothy (Steven) Lane, Mandi (Darrell) Feeney, Nick (Marisela) Nadeau; great-grandchildren Colin Lane, Breonna Feeney, Robert Feeney, Raymond Trent Nadeau, Olimpia Elizabeth Nadeau, Steven Smith, Christopher Smith, Michael Smith; loving nieces and nephews and dear friends. Betty was predeceased by her son Ronald Dean Smith and sister Dorothy Grooms. Betty's family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Enrique Rivas, Dr. Julie Phelps and the compassionate staff in the cardiac care unit of Thayer. Visitation at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Oakland, will be Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. A Funeral will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, 25 Church St., Oakland, followed by services at the Maine Veterans Cemetery Chapel, Augusta.
