HALL, Eleanor (Margaret Eleanor Riches) January 9, 1921 - February 6, 2011 For over 90 years, Eleanor lived, loved and laughed with gusto. With fierce determination she battled spinal stenosis and with tremendous bravery she fought the cancer that ultimately took her life. Eleanor was a wonderful mother to Sheila, Darson, Kathy and Valeri, a loving mother-in-law to Mary Susan, Jim, Andrew and Peter and a proud grandmother to Lauren, Tristan and Katie, Zachary, Devin, Jasmine, Priya, Rebecca and Tyler. She was also an aunt, a cousin, a sister and sister-in-law, a daughter, a niece and a friend. In all her relationships, she gave generously of herself. Her family and friends will remember her always for her warmth, her offbeat sense of humour and her delicious baking. Eleanor was born in Streetsville, Ontario, before it became part of what is now Mississauga. She fondly remembered her childhood there and in Toronto and warming her feet on the coal boxes that heated the streetcars. Eleanor served proudly in the Canadian Women's Army Corps during WWII and was employed by the Canadian Government in Ottawa where she lived for many years. Eleanor loved to travel, to entertain, and to keep in touch with her many friends around the world and most of all to share a good laugh. If you passed her by on the street and dismissed her as "just another old lady", then your loss is great indeed. Eleanor was a force to be reckoned with. She battled for better handicap access to stores and buildings. She challenged the ageism in the medical profession and brought joy, blueberry muffins and chocolate chip cookies to those who cared for her. Raised in the Great Depression, Eleanor didn't waste a thing. And that goes for her life. She packed a lot of love and joy into those short 90 years. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 12, at 2:00 pm at the Kelly Funeral Home, 3000 Woodroffe Avenue, Nepean. Reception to follow. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to a memorial fund for Eleanor's daughter; the Sheila Hall Van Gijn Scholarship Fund at the Toronto Community Foundation, 33 Bloor Street East, Suite 1603, Toronto ON, M4W 3H1, by phone at 416-921-2035, or online at www.tcf.ca . Condolences may be made online at www.kellyfh.ca Even though angels have wings, we know our mom is walking again.
