SAVANNAH - Elder James Williams, age 87, entered into rest Friday, October 3, 2008, at his residence, after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family under the care of Odyssey Hospice. Born in Jefferson County, Fla., Mr. Williams received his early education in the public school system of Monticello, Fla. He then later furthered his education at A.E. Beach High School. Mr. Williams, a retired entrepreneur, was the owner and operator of the former Williams Convenience/Corner Store. He and his family were also one of the original families that started the Cornwall Street Church of Christ, which grew into the Liberty City Church of Christ. He served his church as an Elder, assistant minister, counselor, Sunday School teacher, former chairman of the Financial Committee, Trustee Board member, marriage enrichment counselor, a youth advisor and many other church capacities. Mr. Williams also served his community by serving on the Carver Heights Community Improvement Organization. He leaves memories to be cherished by a loving, devoted wife, Agnes Turner Williams, Savannah; a daughter, Shirley McInnis, Savannah; a son, Johnny L. Williams, Savannah; two sisters, Annie Mae Morale and Betsy Bowden, both of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Johnny Williams, Monticello, Fla.; two sons-in-law, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, the Liberty City Church of Christ family, a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral service for Elder Williams will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, October 11, 2008, at the Liberty City Church of Christ, 1709 Staley Avenue, with Minister Roosevelt Johnson Sr. officiating. Internment: Magnolia Memorial Gardens. Family visitation was held Friday evening from 7-8 p.m. at the Liberty City Church of Christ. Remains were placed in state at 5 p.m. Friday evening for repose.
