GUILDERLAND Edwin S. Smith, 89, of Guilderland, entered into eternal rest on Friday, February 14, 2003 at Guilderland Center Nursing Home. He was born in Hudson, and was the son of the late Edgar J. and Elizabeth B. Storm Smith. Edwin was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the AAF 345th Fighter Squad. He had worked as a printer for the Hudson Daily Star, the Knickerbocker News and the Times Union, from where he retired in 1976. He had also worked as a dispatcher for the Senior Bus Transportation in the Town of Guilderland for several years. In 1991, he was recognized by the town for his dedicated service. Mr. Smith was a communicant of Christ the King Church and past president of it's senior group. He was a longtime member of the Guilderland Elks #2480 and was chairman of the Lodge Trustees for over 20 years. An avid horseman all of his life, Edwin was a riding instructor and harness racing patrol judge at Laurel, Md., Ponce DeLeon in Fla. and Saratoga Race Track. In his early years, he led many parades on horseback with several friends from the Sheriffs Department. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth Mooney Smith. He is the beloved father of Jozyann Smith Andres and her husband William of Guilderland. Cherished grandfather (PopPop) of William G. Andres and Tracey Andres Caulfield and her husband John. Great-grandfather of Chase Michael and Ashlyn Faith Caulfield. He is the brother of Harold Smith and his wife Anna and the late Robert and Clifford Smith and Marian Gorslin. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Ed will be missed by his dedicated and loyal friend, Jack Davis. Funeral services will be Tuesday morning at 9:15 at New Comer-Cannon Family Funeral Home, 343 New Karner Rd. (Rt. 155-south of Central Ave.) thence to Christ the King Church at 10:00 where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The parish family of Christ the King Church will gather at 4:30 for a service of prayer and remembrance. All are welcome. Interment will be in St. James Cemetery, Ghent in the spring.
