December 12, 2008, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center due to heart failure. He was born July 5, 1930, in Syracuse to Gerald and Margaret Ballard and moved to Lakeland in 1998. He was a class of '49 Onondaga Academy graduate. Ed was employed as a master plumber for most of his career and was a member of Plumbers and Pipe-fitters Union, Local #267, Syracuse, for over 50 years. He was also a Korean War Navy veteran and a member of American Legion, Burnet Ave. Post, Syracuse and the VFW and Elks Lodge, both of Lakeland. Ed was an avid football fan who played semipro ball and coached Pop Warner football. Mostly he enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and friends at his summer home at Rainbow Shores on Lake Ontario. He was preceded in death by his son, Paul Ballard, and his brother, Robert Ballard. Ed was united in marriage on September 1, 1984, to his wife Shirley, who resides at Lake Ontario. He is also survived by his daughter, Peggy Holley of Daytona Beach; his stepsons, Michael Ellis of Syracuse, Randy Ellis of Kentucky, Martin Ellis of Syracuse and Robert Ellis of Camillus, NY; stepdaughters, Michelle Ellis of Freeport, NY, and Christine Ellis of Burlington, VT. Eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children's Hospital. Gentry-Morrison Funeral Homes, Dukes-Steen Chapel, Lakeland, FL, has arrangements.
