E. Eugene "Gene" White - Savannah -Edgar Eugene "Gene" White, 78, of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Mary Lou Booten White, died Thursday evening, December 14, 2006, under the care of Hospice Savannah at Memorial Health University Medical Center after a long and courageous battle against cancer. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. Born on April 25, 1928, in Williamson, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Ellis Edmond White and Dora Lee Allen White. Mr. White graduated from Belfry High School in Kentucky in 1947. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951 and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1955. Mr. White was with the United States Postal Service, first on the mail bus routes and then as a letter carrier, having retired in 1989. He was an avid woodworker and golfer. In his retired years he became a life member of Pintail Creek Golf Club. Mr. White attended the First Assembly of God and was a member of American Legion Post 184 in Thunderbolt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Bond, and a granddaughter, Anna Marie White. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Mary Lou Booten White of Savannah; his daughter, Linda Kaye Shellhamer and her husband, Edward, of Savannah; his son, Steven White and his wife, Jamie, of Savannah; three grandchildren, Karen White, Taylor Shellhamer and Seth Shellhamer; his sister, Fannie White of Turkey Creek, Kentucky; his brother, Danny White and his wife, Bobbie, of Savannah; one niece, Marian Bolton and her husband, Larry, and their daughter, Lorry, and four nephews, Tim White, Eddie White, Michael White and Ellis Bond. The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service, 410 Stephenson Avenue. Funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Monday morning in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Cecil F. Gray. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
