Earl Edward Peters, 84, a retired insurance industry executive and native of Jacksonville, Fla., passed away Nov. 16, 2006, in St. Augustine, after a long illness. Earl and his six brothers and sisters were first generation Americans born to parents who had emigrated from Germany through Ellis Island at the turn of the twentieth century. Mr. Peters was a member of the 1940 graduating class of Andrew Jackson High School.Mr. Peters served with the Army during World War II in the 10th Armored Division, 322nd Signal Corps as a tank commander and 2nd lieutenant during the Battle of the Bulge. During the Korean War, Earl was called back to serve stateside at Fort Dix and Fort Bragg and was discharged with a rank of captain.After completion of his first round of military service during World War II, Earl entered Stetson University in Deland, Fla., where he completed a bachelor of science in accounting cum laude and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity and Sigma Alpha Chi, honorary accounting fraternity. Mr. Peters received his Certified Life Underwriting (CLU) degree in 1957.Throughout his career in the life insurance industry, beginning with Gulf Life, Earl held a number of positions with a focus on planning and marketing. Leaving Gulf Life in 1972 as director of planning and marketing, he joined Pilot Life Insurance Co., a division of Jefferson-Pilot, where he was vice-president and director of Home Service Agencies. In 1977 Mr. Peters was selected to Who's Who in Business and Industry in the United States. While in Greensboro, N.C., Earl was also named president of the Life Underwriters Association. Subsequently he held senior management positions at several other life insurance companies, including his last position at National Security Life Insurance in Elba, Ala. He served as a director on the board of Mutual Savings Life Insurance in Decatur, Ala., for nine years.Throughout his life, Earl was an active part of his community in church and civic organizations. He was an active member of the Rotarians and was president of the local Rotary Club in the mid 1980s. He was a board member of the South Alabama American Heart Association. Earl and his first wife Alma (deceased) helped to found the North Florida Juvenile Diabetes Association in Jacksonville in the early 1960s. Mr. Peters was active in the local and state Republican Parties in both North Carolina and Alabama. Earl was a member of the Session of the Arlington Presbyterian Church, a position he also held at Starmount Presbyterian Church in Greensboro and Green Hill Presbyterian Church, Enterprise, Ala. Mr. Peters was an active Sunday school teacher and youth group leader at Arlington Presbyterian Church. Most recently, Mr. Peters was an active member in the Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Augustine.Earl is survived by his wife, Winifred Peters of St. Augustine; his daughters, Kimberly Strong of Winston-Salem, N.C., her husband David and their daughters, Katelyn and Katharine; and Pam Roberts of Marietta, Georgia, her husband Larry and twins, Lauren and Ryan; his brother, Robert Peters of Jacksonville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Peters was also preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Alma Dawson Peters, mother of Pam and Kim, who died of cancer in 1991. Both daughters feel very grateful that their father's life was so blessed with the love and care of Winifred at a second stage of their dad's life.Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006 at Memorial Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dwyn Mounger, interim pastor, officiating.The family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center - North Wing, 200 Mariner Health Way, St. Augustine, FL 32086, Northeast Florida Community Hospice, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257 or to Memorial Presbyterian Church, 32 Sevilla St., St. Augustine, FL 32084.Kotrady-Hudgins-Croyle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.PAID NOTICE
