SMITH, Mrs. Esther McShan, of 309 Beulah Street, Dothan, Alabama, died Saturday, June 23, 2001 at Kindred Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Funeral service will be held Saturday, June 30, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. at Saint Peter Baptist Church, 120 Girard Street, Abbeville, Alabama, with Dr. Charles A. Lett, Rev. Mark Mayhew and Rev. J. Henry Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the Saint Mary Baptist Church Cemetery with Levite Funeral Home directing. The body will be placed in the church two (2) hours prior to the time of service. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2001 in Parlor B, Levite Funeral Home, 814 Headland Avenue, Dothan, Alabama. Mrs. Esther McShan Smith was born March 19, 1926, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; she was the third child of nine children born to Mr. and Mrs. Lomas (Henrietta) McShan. She was educated in the public school system of Tuscaloosa and later attended Alabama A & M University and Stillman College. She became a teacher who was a true professional. Her peers in the Dothan City School honored her by being named Teacher of the Year. She was a member of several fraternal and civic organizations. Some of the positions held by her were: Grand District Deputy of District 5, Mizpah Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Past Loyal Lady Ruler of Pride of the Wiregrass Assembly, Order of the Golden Circle and Grand Recording Secretary of the Ladies Aid Missionary Society Grand Union. This Servant of God leaves to cherish her memories and carry the torch, her husband, James A. Smith; two daughters, Carlotta and Ramona Smith and one (1) son, James Bland (Dorothy LaShay) Smith, all of Dothan, Alabama; One (1) sister, Emma McShan and one (1) sister-in-law, Mary McShan, both of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; four brothers, Henry (Manola) McShan, Stone Mountain, GA, Lomas McShan, Jr., El Rito, New Mexico, James (Hazle) McShan, Houston, TX and Lawrence McShan, Tuscaloosa, AL and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and several members of the extended family.
