Elisabeth Case "Libby" Johnson, passed away Saturday February 4, 2012 at Sunnybrook Village in Brunswick, Me, after a brief, courageous battle with cancer. 94 years young, Libby shone with goodness from the inside out, and had the wonderful gift of brightening the lives of everyone she knew. She lived every day with a joy and a grace that were a shining example to all those her life touched. Libby was born in Topeka, Kansas on February 25, 1917, the daughter of John Francis Case and Margaret (Calvert) Case. The family moved to Wright City, Missouri and "Shady Lawn Farm " in 1920 where she had many happy childhood memories, including raising her prize winning chickens. Libby attended Kirksville, Missouri State Teachers College as well as Central Wesleyan College for Women. She worked as a secretary for CPA Arthur Smith until her marriage to Samuel Johnson in 1939. A bicycle ride and ice cream cone started a decade's long relationship that prospered and endured until Sam's passing after nearly 65 years of marriage. Their lifelong journey led to living in many states…Louisiana, North Carolina, Delaware, New Jersey, Illinois and Maine as well as spending years in Italy, Scotland and Iran. Libby loved reading, (mysteries were her favorites), playing Pinochle with family and especially family get-together's. She was always active in church organizations wherever she lived-she taught Sunday school, sang in church choirs, and had a huge demand for her coffee cakes at bake sales-they were so popular, they were usually spoken for ahead of time! She was a long time member of the Phippsburg Congregational Church, and had many happy summer Sundays there as the "Lemonade Lady." A gifted pianist, Libby loved playing the piano and wrote many wonderful songs, both music and lyrics. She recorded three CD's in Charlottesville, VA containing her own music and her favorites. Her piano playing provided countless hours of entertainment to family, friends, and anyone fortunate enough to come upon a Libby piano session. She truly was the "Life of the Party" whenever she played. Libby loved nature, and was an avid bird watcher. She was further able to fulfill her love of nature through trips to the Galapagos Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. A love of travel led to wonderful trips to many interesting countries including China, Egypt and most of Europe. While Libby loved to travel and lived in many interesting places, the one place that held her heart closest was her beloved "Cottage on the Bay" in Phippsburg, ME. She loved the woods, the ocean, sunsets and sailboats, and there are countless memories of friends and family gatherings at this priceless spot. It has always been, and remains the "home port" for all of our family; the place where we all gather to enjoy the outdoors and each other. She will live on forever there, in the place that was so near and dear to her heart. Libby is survived by son Ronald Johnson and wife Janet of Houston, Texas, son Eric Johnson and wife Jocelyn of Phippsburg, ME, daughter Margaret "Meg" Hall and husband John of Bath, ME, Son-in-law Jim Hougan of Charlottesville, VA as well as 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and countless other family and friends. Elisabeth Case "Libby" Johnson truly left a huge Legacy of Love. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Samuel Johnson in January 2004 and daughter Carolyn Hougan in February 2007. She was also pre-deceased by brothers Wilfred and Francis Case and sisters Aileen Heimerdinger and Cleta Case. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Sunnybrook Village, where Libby has resided for the last 7 3/4 years. She made many wonderful friends there, the residents and staff truly became a second family to her, and we are forever grateful. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 11, 2012 at the Phippsburg Congregational Church at 1 PM, with a reception following in the Johnson Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of Libby's favorite charities, either: The Salvation Army, 25 Congress Ave, Bath, ME 04530 or The Pine Tree Society, 149 Front St., Bath, ME 04530 To share your thoughts and condolences with Libby's family please visit www.
