KING -Douglas M, formerly of Regina and Saskatoon, died Friday, November 24, 2006 in Whitehorse Yukon at age 85. Doug enlisted in the RCAF in 1941 and was proud to have earned the rank of Flight Lieutenant. His plane was shot down in April 1944, when he became a POW in Stalag III (The Great Escape). He took part in the brutal "March to Freedom " from January to April 1945. Following the war, Doug completed his degree in Agriculture from the University of Manitoba. During this time Doug met Betty (MacKay), of Melville, Sask, the love of his life and they were married in 1948. Doug completed his Masters degree in Sociology and Economics from Iowa State College in 1951. After spending 2 years in Iowa, Doug and his family returned to Canada and settled in Regina. Doug was Regina Branch Manager of the Mutual Life of Canada from 1953-1975, at which time he went with the Provincial Government in various departments until his retirement in 1986. In 1998 Doug and Betty moved to Saskatoon to enjoy family and new friendships before moving to Whitehorse in 2004. Doug was an active volunteer in the community and was famous for his annual role as Santa Claus. Doug and Betty were members of Regina's Wesley United Church Choir and sang together for over 40 years. Throughout his life, Doug enjoyed restoring antique cars, collecting hockey cards, landscape painting and square dancing. Doug always enjoyed meeting people and cherished the friendships that he made over the years. Above all else, Doug enjoyed spending time with his family and was so proud to see them grow as individuals. Those left to cherish Doug's life are his beloved wife Betty, daughter Nancy (Ross) Fraser of Saskatoon and grandchildren Tom of Red Deer, Chad (Amanda) of Weyburn, Paul, and Karen of Saskatoon. Son Jim (Bonnie) of Whitehorse, and grandchildren Matthew, Mark (Jen) of Whitehorse, Michelle (Ben) of Vancouver. Five Great grandchildren, Taylor (Red Deer), Kylan, Tyler, Anna (Weyburn), and Erin (Whitehorse). Doug was predeceased by his sister Betty (McIvor) of Kelowna and is survived by his brothers Bill (Jean) of Dauphin, and Jack (Carolee) of Winnipeg. Doug was a kind, caring, giving man, truly a gentleman. Dad even though the jokes may be "corny ", when they made someone smile they were worthwhile! We will remember and we will smile! A celebration of life will be held December 29th, 2006 at the family home (146 North Star Drive, Whitehorse). If friends desire, the family would appreciate remembrances to the Sask. Parkinsons Foundation, 103 Hospital Drive, Box 102, Saskatoon Saskatchewan. S7N 0W8, or the charity of your choice.
