ALEXANDRIA -- Douglas F. Paterson, 78, of Cass Mill Road, died Dec. 22, 2008, at home, after a period of declining health. He was born in Providence, R.I., to James and Margaret (Borland) Paterson. Following graduation from high school, he joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return home, he enrolled in Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I. under the GI Bill. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Paterson worked in the jewelry industry as a senior manager for Herff Jones in Providence. In 1992, he moved to Alexandria and built a log home. While living in Lincoln, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Lions Club and was involved with Washington Oaks, a program for wayward boys. Family includes his wife of 56 years, E. Phyllis (Carney) Paterson of Alexandria; sons Gregory Paterson of Waleska, Ga., Douglas Paterson Jr. of Pascoag, R.I., Steven Paterson of Lincoln, R.I., David Paterson of Lincoln, R.I., and Andrew Paterson of Chepachet, R.I.; daughters E. Susan Latimer of North Scituate, R.I., Sandra Blais of Alexandria, Elizabeth DeCorte of Chepachet, R.I., and Cheryl Dimsey of North Providence, R.I.; 14 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Donald Paterson of Phoenix, Ariz. IN HIS LIFE: He was an active member of his community. While in Rhode Island, he and his wife were foster parents. He was a member of the Rhode Island Parents Council for Hearing Impaired Children. After moving to New Hampshire, he joined the Minot Cavis Post 26 of the American Legion in Bristol. He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Parish, where he was a lecturer and a Eucharistic minister. Though he was retired, he spent 11 1/2 years as a supervisor of the Alexandria Transfer Station. SERVICES: Calling hours are Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Emmons Funeral Home, 115 South Main St., Bristol. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Chapel of Holy Trinity Parish, corner of Route 3A and West Shore Road. Memorial donations may be made to the Payson Cancer Center at Concord Hosptial, 241 Pleasant St., Concord 03301. Interment with military honors will be held at a later date in the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.
