JOHNSTON Dorothy Winifred "Billy" (Wright) June 5, 1917 - March 31, 2009Billy, a dynamic, caring woman who was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her, passed away peacefully in Palliative Care at Peace Arch Hospital with her family at her side. Predeceased by her parents, her sister Betty Wright, and her husband, George, Billy is survived by her daughter, Jeffie Ward (Glenn), son, Archie Johnston (Susan), grandchildren, Lisa Coulson (Paul), Ryan Ward (Jennefer), Kyla Beattie (Neal), Bobby Johnston, Peter Johnston and Tessa Johnston, and 6 great- grandchildren. Billy spent her early years in Rossland where she excelled in piano, earning top marks in her music exams, skiing and enjoying the outdoors. Billy moved to West Vancouver with her family and entered university. She earned her teaching certificate at Normal School, specializing in music. She taught in Matsqui, Mission, and then Vancouver during the war. She married in 1947, settling down in West Vancouver to raise her family. She taught at Irwin Park Elementary for 17 years and her choirs sang every Christmas in Park Royal. In retirement, Billy and George enjoyed family dinners, cruising, working in the garden and walking on the seawall with their dog. Billy knitted for all her family and friends and enjoyed being part of a knitting group. She also helped every year with the bazaar at West Vancouver United Church. After George's death in 1991, Billy continued living independently in her house until after her 90th birthday. Billy's family would like to thank her neighbours, who helped to make this possible, especially the Knill family and Tom Darwin. Also, the family would like to thank "We Care" on the North Shore and the nurses and support staff at Westminster House in South Surrey for the loving care Billy received during the last few years. Billy's greatest pleasure was spending time with her family and her many friends, old and new. All who knew her were touched by her enjoyment of life and we will all miss her positive attitude and generous spirit. Following a private burial of her ashes, there will be a celebration of Billy's life at West Vancouver United Church on Wednesday, April 22 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Billy's memory to the Cancer Society.
