LEVANT and EXETER - Dorothy May "Toots" (Denkewitz) Downing, 79, wife of the late Maynard E. Downing, died Nov. 11, 2011, at her residence in Levant, where she had resided for five years. She was born Aug. 27, 1932, in Providence, R.I., the daughter of Johannes and Dorothy (Wiley) Denkewitz. She was a resident of Exeter most of her life and at the time of her husband's death in 2005 had been married for 57 years. She loved to make quilts and crochet, especially for her family. She is survived by a son, Maynard Jr. "Ned" and his wife, Judy, of San Marcos, Calif.; two daughters, Linda Bryson of Newport and Peggy Bowley of Levant; a daughter-in-law, Becky Downing of Brownville; a sister, Lisbeth Buswell of Corinth; 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; her stepmother, Celia; a son, Michael Downing; a sister, Patricia Folk; and a brother, Jack Dennison. Friends may visit with the family 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at 1204 Horseback Road, Levant. Cremation arrangements are by Thompson Funeral Home, 17 Hudson Road, Corinth.
