Downing, 87, died peacefully Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, following a period of declining health.She was born in Franklin on March 20, 1926, the daughter of John and Florence (Merrill) Downing. She graduated from Franklin High School in 1943 and from North Hampton Business College in North Hampton, Mass., in 1944. Her first full-time job after graduating from college was at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, Conn. She later lived in Laconia for many years before moving to Concord in the early sixties. After almost 20 years working for the New Hampshire Department of Labor, she retired at the age of 59.She loved attending her high school reunions, and also enjoyed talking politics and could recite all of the United States presidents names in order. She loved spending time with her family. She would often take trips to Florida to visit her sister and enjoyed shopping trips and dining out with her daughter and grandchildren. During the last few years as a resident of the Merrimack County Nursing Home, she loved the resident activities, especially playing bingo. Also, her son-in-law's spiritual visits and hymn sings with her were always a highlight of her week.Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Kathleen F. Jaworski and her husband, Charles W. Jaworski, of Boscawen; her sister, Margaret T. Downing of St. Petersburg, Fla.; her granddaughter, Lisa M. Vachon and her husband, Jeff R. Vachon, of Concord; two great-grandchildren, Andrew E. Poirier and Kyle J. Poirier, and two great-great-grandchildren, Danielle L. Poirier and Dominic H. Poirier, all of Boscawen.The family will receive visitors Monday, Jan. 13, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Phaneuf Funeral Home, 172 King St. in Boscawen.A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.Donations in Dorothy's memory may be made to CRVNA Hospice, The Slusser Center, 30 Pillsbury St., Concord, N.H. 03301.Phaneuf Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Boscawen office, is assisting the family with arrangements.
