Dorothy Lechner Smith, Verona, Missouri, passed away at 2:05 p.m., Thursday, December 28, 2006. She was born April 28, 1913, in Verona, the daughter of Edward and Lena (Seinater) Lechner. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Verona. Dorothy had much diversity during her long life. The first was as a telephone operator at the Verona telephone exchange; assistant postmistress, Verona post office; receptionist at St. Vincent's' Hospital, Monett; house mother at St. Mary's College, Omaha, Neb.; and last, but not least, in her heart, a foster grandmother at the Barry-Lawrence County Development Center for the Handicapped Children, Monett where she worked 26 years having received many plaques in recognition of her faithful dedication. Daughter, Marilyn Dean Crais, her parents, sister, Betty Lechner Kelsey and three brothers, infant, Gerald, Edward and Bernard, preceded her in death. Survivors include her grandson, Marc Crais and wife Angela, Springfield, sister, Stella Montgomery, Neosho, two brothers, Bob Lechner, Springfield, Clarence Lechner, Aurora, two sisters-in-law, Roah Nell Lechner, Verona, Patricia Lechner, Springfield and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. January 3 at the Sacred Heart Church, Verona with burial to follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Verona. Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 2nd in the Crafton-Cantrell Funeral Chapel followed by visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Church, Barry-Lawrence Development Center or Community Hospice of America in care of the funeral home.
