Dorothy L. Johnson Greenfield CenterDorothy L. Johnson, 90, of Greenfield Center, passed away Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Maplewood Manor after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born Dorothy Lillian Brown on November 28, 1921, the child of John and Florence Brown of Malta Ridge. She graduated from Saratoga High School in 1940 and went to work at the Ballston Knitting Mill. In 1942, she married Ernie Johnson of Ballston Spa, a sailor in the US Navy. After the war they settled in Ballston Spa and in 1948 moved to Greenfield Avenue where Ernie, an auto mechanic, set up his business Ernie's Auto Parts. A homemaker raising two children, Dorothy became involved in the Ladies Home Bureau in the 1950s and at the end of the decade began a long association with the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. While with the Legion she ran a community outreach program to assist people recovering at home from recent hospital stays. She spent many tireless hours delivering loaner medical equipment, crutches, wheelchairs and walkers, to people in need. Aside from being a skilled homemaker, wife and mother, she also maintained a long interest in making arts and crafts. She was a member of a Crafts Club for several years and even gave instruction at meetings. She and her husband relocated to Greenfield Center in 1993 where she remained until December 2009, when suffering from the effects of Alzheimer's disease made home care difficult, and she entered Maplewood Manor in Ballston Spa. During her later years, even though she experienced the loss of memory and abilities associated with the disease, she could still display flashes of her old self, quick wit and her straightforward manner. She was well liked by her friends and family and will be remembered as someone who was able to weather through difficult circumstances with a positive attitude. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest Johnson; and two brothers, Gilbert and Alfred Brown. Dorothy is survived by her children, Elaine Kleam of Greenfield Center and Larry Johnson of Hyde Park, Massachusetts. Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 234, 23 Pleasant Street, Ballston Spa, NY 12020 or Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Special thanks to the staff at Maplewood Manor, Community Hospice of Saratoga, and Home Instead Saratoga, especially Cheryl Ballou. Online remembrances may be made at www.armerfuneral home.com
