Dorothy Johnson, 99, born March 23, 1911 in Marshall Wisconsin queitly passed over at Hope Hospice, Fort Myers, Wednesday, Oct. 6. Long-time resident, she had most recently lived at Calusa Harbour and was an active member of Cypress Lake United Methodist Church. Up until the last few months, she had engaged in her two passions: painting and duplicate bridge. Dorothy graduated from the University of Wisconsin and taught at Randall School, Madison, WI. Later, after receiving her Master's degree in Counseling Education from the University of New York, she taught at the Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY. After 26 years in Rochester, NY, Dorothy and her husband George retired to Seven Lakes, Fort Myers in 1976. They immediately began their work as volunteer tutors. Later, she worked for Literacy Volunteers of Lee County and tutored for 12 years. Her specialty as a Reading and English teacher prepared her for her later work tutoring adults in Lee County.The Johnsons joined the Cypress Lake Methodist Church in 1982 and Dorothy remained active on committees, was a visiting Samaritan, sang in the choir and worked with the Anna Rebecca Circle.In addition she belonged to Greeters, Continental Club, and the McGregor Point Bridge Club. Besides her interest in traveling, Dorothy liked reading, gardening, painting, golfing and bridge.Dorothy is survived by a son-in-law, many cousins in Milwaukee, WI, and many, many good friends.A memorial service will be held at the Cypress Lake United Methodist Church at 8570 Cypress Lake Dr., Monday, October 25, at 11:30 AM.Final interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. at the grave site of her husband. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Cypress Lake Methodist Church, or to Hope Hospice, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908.
