<!-- FH = . -->Dorothy JohnsonDorothy Johnson, a former emergency room nurse who returned to the area she grew up near died January 18, 2012 in Mercy Villa Nursing Home, Springfield, Missouri. She was 97 years old.She died of peacefully after a long illness. Mrs. Johnson's nursing career spanned 18 years. Beginning as a floor nurse in 1957 at Eaton Rapids Community Hospital in Michigan, she was occasionally asked to assist in the emergency room. Composed and efficient, she became favored among the doctors who recommended she train for a full time position. She returned from training and stayed in the emergency room until she retired in 1975. Mrs. Johnson was born Dorothy Marie Hunsaker on December 4, 1915 in Mansfield, Missouri, the third youngest of ten children. Mansfield was also the home of Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of 'Little House on the Prairie', and her husband Alfonso. She recalled her brother would split wood and work in their yard and her eldest sister would work in their house.Her father, Atlas Hunsaker worked for the railroad that ran through Mansfield and she remembered her and her friends often getting rides home from school on a flat cart. Her mother, Eva Hunsaker, born Eva Pierce, besides caring for her family with ten children was the area midwife, a role that kept her away many nights and steered Mrs. Johnson into the role of cooking and baking for the family at an early age. She said she would stand on apple crates to reach the counter to roll out biscuits and knead bread. After high school, Mrs. Johnson moved to Michigan. There she met and married George Sanders. They had three children before divorcing in 1962.During the war Mrs. Johnson worked in a factory making parts for fighter jets. After winning a series of cash prizes for efficiency suggestions she was promoted over senior workers to be the assembly line foreman.Upon retiring in 1975 she married Bernard Johnson of Eaton Rapids, Michigan. They moved to Rogersville, Missouri the same year. Mr. Johnson died on September 19th, 2000.Mrs. Johnson was an active member of the Victory Baptist Church until her sudden illness in 2004. She is survived by two daughters, Georgia Hotchkiss of Weston, Massachusetts, Sue Hall of Eaton Rapids, Michigan, and a son, Robert Sanders of Leesburg, Virginia; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Services were held January 24th. Memorials may be sent to Mercy Villa Home Care Fund.
