OBITUARY DOROTHY ELIZABETH CHRISTIE (Nee WILSON) Born August 8, 1915 in Berwick, Nova Scotia passed away peacefully on August 5, 2006, with her husband of fifty-eight years, Reverend Howard Christie, holding her hand, surrounded by her loving children Robert, Ken, Karen, David and Donald. Dorothy Christie was the second woman in Canada to be awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Following her graduation in 1942 from Mount Allison University with her friend Alex Colville, she went on to open the Fine Arts Department at Memorial University in St. John's, Newfoundland. As an artist she had an unmatched eye for detail and continued to paint, draw and sculpt throughout her life. Other expressions of her creativity led her to writing, horticulture, piano, and dance - square dancing vigorously until the age of eighty-nine. Her warm smile, hugs, animated conversation and fun loving nature brought life to the world around her. In the role of Ministers wife, her entertaining personality is remembered in communities through the Maritimes, Boston and Montreal, and for over 3,000 hours of volunteering at the Montreal General Hospital until her retirement in 2005. She was predeceased by her younger brother Dr. James A.S. Wilson of Montreal and her sister Jean Gibson of Kentville, Nova Scotia. She is survived by her sister Eloise Pottie and family of Liverpool, Nova Scotia, as well and James' and Jean's children. Dorothy leaves many happy memories for her children Dr. Robert Christie (Joan) of Fredericton, NB, Kenneth Christie (Rebecca) of Vancouver, BC, Karen of Johannesburg South Africa, twins David (Martha) of Austin, Texas, and Donald (Charlene) of Oakville, Ontario. She remains an inspiration to her beloved grandchildren Ian, Ward, Laura, Scott and Jonathan. Most of all, she has had a fulfilled and healthy life with her husband Reverend G. Howard Christie, a United Church minister. Funeral service is on Dorothy's ninety-first birthday, at the Saint Lambert United Church, 85 Desaulniers Blvd. at 2 pm Tuesday, August 8, 2006.
