PLATTSBURGH Dorothy D. Carter, 96, a resident of the Samuel F. Vilas Home, Beekman Street and formerly a resident of Latham, N.Y., died December 21, 2004 at the CVPH Medical Center. Mrs. Carter was born on August 15, 1908 in Plattsburgh, the daughter of Charles L. and Florence (Tromblee) Dailey. She married James Lester Les Carter, October 25, 1935 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Plattsburgh. Dorothy was a resident of the Vilas Home since February of 2000 where she lived the last years of her life in great dignity and comfort under the care of their dedicated staff to whom her family extend many thanks. Prior to this, Dorothy was one of the first residents of Lake Forest when they opened their doors in December 1999, having moved there from 457 Troy-Schenectady Road, Latham, N.Y. where she and Les had lived for over 50 years. She had been a librarian at Heatly High School in Green Island, N.Y. since 1947 until her retirement in 1976. One of her proudest achievements was having won the Albany Times Union 1953 Match Famous Pairs game where her first prize was a brand new, fully-loaded 53' Olds 98 automobile. Dorothy loved playing bridge, her circle of friends in Latham and the races at Saratoga where she and Les owned and raced their horses. Before moving to the Albany area, Dorothy was the English and French teacher at the old Morrisonville High School from the fall after her graduation from the University of Vermont in 1930 until 1947. She was a member of the PHS class of 1926. Survivors include her sister, Marjorie (Dailey) Glenn Cronin of Lake Forest; her brother-in-law, Leon Jacques of Morrisonville; her nieces, Phyllis Jacques of Plattsburgh and Barbara Bordeau of Morrisonville and her husband Terry; her nephews, Robert Glenn of Mexico and his wife Louise, David Glenn of Plattsburgh and his wife Lynne, Stephen Glenn of Glens Falls and his wife Debbie; several grandnieces and nephews; and her dear friends, Harmon and Jane LaMar and Margaret Fogarty. Her parents, her husband Les in 1993, her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Betty Jacques of Morrisonville in 2002 and her nephew, Ralph Glenn of Plattsburgh in 1992, predeceased her. There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held at Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad Street, Plattsburgh at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 23, 2004. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the S.F. Vilas Home, 61 Beekman Street, Plattsburgh, NY in care of the Alma Cowden account, which has been established to assist those residents in need.
