Groton - Dorothy Bernice (Washington) Williams was called home on Dec. 25, 2012.Mrs. Williams was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Dec. 12, 1919, to George Augustine and Eleanor Washington. She was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and worked in daycare as a teacher's aide and later in her life as a home care attendant.Mrs. Williams was a member of Newman Memorial Methodist Church of Brooklyn, N.Y., where she served as a Brownie leader, a secretary for the YPA Club, and Sunday school teacher. Her love of children motivated her to earn an associate's degree in early childhood from The New School of Social Research in New York City.Mrs. Williams is survived by a daughter, Diana Lynn Shiver-Hunter and her husband, Reginald Hunter, of Groton; a grandson, John-Paul Shiver of San Francisco, Calif.; and her brothers, Harold, Roy, and Robert Washington.Dorothy was married to Robert Williams in 1975. He was a dear friend and husband until his passing in 1993.Mrs. Williams was also predeceased by her sister, Evelyn Selsey; her brothers, Leslie, Leon, Donald, and Kenneth Washington; and her granddaughter, Indira Emma Shiver.Mrs. Williams was an avid sports fan. She loved to watch University of Connecticut women's basketball and the New York Mets. She was originally a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers. She will be missed by her loving family.A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today, Dec. 28, at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 181 Ocean Ave., New London. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
