DORIS NEIL MATTER ANDERSON, 94 SNELLVILLE, GA. - Doris Neil Matter Anderson, born October 31, 1916 to Raymond Clyde and Elba Fincher Foster Matter, died of natural causes June 20, 2011 peacefully in her home. She married Merlin B. Anderson April 2, 1938. Her parents, husband, daughter Ellen Kay Anderson, three brothers, Forrest, Jack, and Curtis Matter and two sisters, Alma Padon and Virginia Olney Copper, preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Neil and Alan Pearson of Atlanta, Georgia, two grandsons and their wives, Reid and Erin Pearson of Atlanta, Andrew and Jennifer of Myrtle Beach, SC, one granddaughter Karen Walsh and her husband Nicholas of Anguilla, BWI, a sister Clare M. Hampshire of Virginia Beach, VA, seven great grandchildren: Mackenzie, Bennett, Emme, Kate, Meghan, and Owen Pearson, and Molly Kay Walsh; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was educated in Virginia and had a successful career in accounting and administrative work. While living in Norfolk, Doris was a member of Park Place Baptist Church and later First Lutheran where she served as president of the women' organization and taught Sunday school. She was active in the Girls Scouts, the Junior Women's Club and Suburban Club, and was PTA president. Doris and her family moved to High Point, North Carolina in 1958, where she worked for the NC Jaycees and the International Home Furnishings Center. In High Point she was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, serving as assisting minister, president of churchwomen and 50 Plus Club, circle chair, taught Sunday school and served on the Church Council. She was President of Furniture City Women's Club, YMCA, and Church Women United in Norfolk and High Point. Doris was a Girl Scouts leader, and president of Keywauee Council, delivered Meals on Wheels, and served as a volunteer for hospice and other groups. She moved to Lakeland, Florida in 1995 where she was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and served as assisting minister, president of WELCA, and program chair of Saints Alive Senior Group. She was member and officer of Meet and Greet Club, Lakeland Women's Club, and a number of bridge clubs. In 2006, Doris moved to Lawrenceville, Georgia to Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett becoming active in this senior community by serving as president of the Residents Council, library chair, bridge club co-chair, and ambassador. Among her interests were reading, playing bridge and piano, traveling, and enjoying spending time with family and friends. A memorial service will be held at Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett on Thursday, June 23 at 2:00 p.m. with interment at Floral Gardens in High Point.
