JOHNSON, Doreen1923-2013Doreen passed away in her sleep January 21, 2013. A mother who cared ("D"), an involved grandmother ("Grand D"), loyal friend, good neighbour, and lifelong pet lover. Doreen was born and raised in Vancouver, where she lived all of her life. She attended local schools and later, UBC. Married, in Vancouver, to Roland ("Rolly") Johnson, a Vancouver lawyer, in 1951 after which they had their son Eric and daughter Janice. Athletic and active, not only in early life, but right up until the time of her stroke, Doreen passionately enjoyed sport, especially tennis and golf, both as participant and spectator. Always charitable-minded, Doreen was actively engaged in giving back to her community and did so up to the time of her death volunteering in her Kerrisdale neighbourhood. Doreen had a great appreciation for the Arts and enjoyed times of spiritual communion. Doreen regularly attended the VSO and Opera; she loved immersing herself in progressive literature, modern culture, and current events, and enjoyed many a rousing discussion with friends on the topics of Canadian and BC politics. She had many fond memories of her travels around the globe with friends and family. But in her later years, her true love and focus was travelling and spending with time with her 'Best Boy' golf, ping pong and tennis partner grandson Charles. Please visit http:/ /celebratingdoreen.squarespace.com. Doreen is survived by her son Eric, daughter Janice, grandson Charles, brother-in-law Gilbert, sister in law Daphne and their families. Grand D was an 'institution' in many of our lives and will be dearly missed, both by family and close friends in Vancouver, West Vancouver, and Victoria, BC. At Doreen's request, there will be no service and a private celebration of life with family and friends will be in the spring. Donations can be made in Doreen's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC.
