Donna Lee Mitchell, 55 BATH -- Donna Lee Mitchell, 55, of Bath, died Thursday, May 29, 2008, at home with her family. She was born in Brunswick, on Jan. 2, 1953, the daughter of Madeline Morse and Ernest Morse. She was the youngest of eight children. She graduated from Brunswick High School in 1971 and attended Husson College. She later met the love of her life and future husband, Gerald E. Mitchell Sr. They married in 1973 and she worked for Head Start and then the Farmer's Home agency in Damariscotta until they started a family. For 35 years she did the daily operations and bookkeeping for their business Mitchell Construction while raising their two children. Her reason for being was her family, for being a wife, a mother and most recently a grandmother. A devoted daughter, wife and mother, her family came first. She spent hours attending her children's school and sporting events. A kind and nurturing person, she was a friend to many and she had the ability to make anyone she spoke to feel better. As her children grew, the neighborhood children always gravitated to her home, and it was not uncommon that she had six to eight children in her car on any given school morning, driving everyone to school. She loved the sound of children playing and she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was the most proud while strolling her granddaughter on their daily walk. She absolutely loved life and never took it for granted. She embraced life every day and she embraced life in Maine. She enjoyed picking blueberries, cooking, boating, shopping, going to yard sales and thrift stores. Even while vacationing, she would have to stop at a Goodwill store or thrift shop. She looked forward to each season and holiday, and in the past decorated her home for each holiday. Each Thanksgiving was spent at their hunting camp in Whitefield. She particularly loved the Christmas season, and every year donated specific gifts to organizations, including the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital and the Tedford Shelter. She was very patriotic and attended all of the memorial day parades and loved the Fourth of July. On occasion she would personally thank service men and women for their service to our country. She enjoyed her summers with her family at their cottage in Sabino and attended the weekly potluck suppers at the Sabino Hall where she was known as an excellent cook. She was known to state on Sunday evening that she hated to see the weekend end. A loving, spirited woman she was not afraid to speak her mind. She was most often in support of the underdog even if there was no vested interest for her. She attended the Phippsburg Congregational Church and occasionally volunteered at the Bath Food Bank. In the past she had also delivered meals for the Tedford Shelter's Meal a month program. She had a beautiful smile and spirit. She voraciously fought cancer for two and a half years, never giving up hope and was optimistic that all forms of cancer would soon be cured. Surviving are her husband, Gerald E. Mitchell Sr.; her two children, Angel and husband Michael Jamison; granddaughter Aurora Lee Jamison of Bath; and son Gerald E. Mitchell Jr. and his wife Jennifer; and grandson David Parker Mitchell of West Bath; brother Dudley Leavitt of Topsham, brother Tom Leavitt and his wife Barbara of Ellsworth; a sister-in-law Phyllis Leavitt of Brunswick; a sister Sandra Daigle of Lisbon Falls, Jackie Leavitt and his wife Joanne of Topsham, Bonnie Pardue and her husband John of Brunswick, and brother Pat Grover and his wife Sybil Staples of West Bath. She is predeceased by her parents and a brother, Robert Leavitt of Brunswick. At her request, services were private. Arrangements are by Stetson's Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick. Memorial condolences may be expressed at stetsonsfuneralhome.com. Memorial contributions can be mailed to: The Maine Chapter of the American Lung Association 122 State St. Augusta, Maine 04330 All contributions will be specifically directed toward lung cancer research.
