DONNA K. COHEN HOBART, IN Donna K. Cohen, age 71, of Hobart, beloved mother of Melissa (Daniel Sawochka) Cohen and Lukas (Carla) Cohen, adored grandmother to Max and Rachel, died on Thursday, July 22, 2010 after a long and courageous battle with emphysema. She is also survived by her loving sister, Barbara Kennedy; brother, George (Arlene) Golightly; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was born in Metropolis, IL, to Herbert (Ironworker Local 395) and Nevil Golightly who preceded her in death. Donna moved to Lake County, IN, in her teens. She worked for Marv and Ben Rosen at Sports World in Gary, IN, where she met Max Cohen. They married in 1960. The marriage ended amicably and together they raised their children. Determined to set an example for Melissa and Lukas, Donna returned to college, obtaining her teaching degree and Masters in Education from Indiana University Northwest. For over 25 years she skillfully taught at Polk Elementary School in Lake Station with her unique blend of humor and compassion until her health simply would not permit her to continue. She had a positive and enduring impact on the students in her charge. Her former students often visited and called to thank her for providing them with a solid foundation. Donna enjoyed immensely the company of her special "swamp witches" bridge club and her teachers club. She was a member and Fundraiser of the Hobart Community Fund (HIEDC). Many will remember her jovial spirit while participating in the annual Dam Duck Race. During her life she enjoyed travel, a good joke, cooking, reading and most of all spending quality time with her children and grandchildren. She was a woman of class, warmth and wit devoted to her family and loyal to her friends. She gave so much to so many. She will be remembered with love and a smile and missed by all those who knew her. Funeral service will be Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7th St., Hobart. Friends may visit with the family from noon to time of service at Burns Funeral Home (Hobart). www.burnsfuneral.com
