Smith Donna Joyce (Preston). Died on April 7, 2010 in Lake Forest, Illinois. She was the wife of the Harris G Smith, professor of journalism at Boston University. Donna Smith was born on December 5, 1927 in Bismarck, ND She was a 1950 graduate of Western Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science degree and she received an M.S. in journalism from the University of Illinois. Prior to coming to Ipswich, Donna had been assistant editor of the Kansas University Alumni Magazine; assistant to the editor of "Capper's Farmer Magazine at Topeka, KS; editorial assistant on the "Inland News" at Chicago, IL; and public relations assistant for the American Hospital Association in Chicago, IL; Donna entered the New England newspaper world as editor of the Ipswich Chronicle for nine months and subsequently taught industrial editing at Boston University. From there she joined the Newburyport Daily News editorial staff as a sole Copy Editor and was the only woman copy editor in Massachusetts. In August 1970, the Smiths started The Ipswich Today Newspaper in their home. eventually the paper moved to Hammatt Street, Ipswich. The paper was published monthly. Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Harris Smith and their son, Erik Smith. Donna remained at their home until she moved to live with her sister in Illinois. Donna is survived by her sister, Sharlyne and brother-in-law Donald Sheppard and two nephews Kent and Keith Sheppard. A Spiritual Memorial Service and interment will be held October 24, 2010 at 2:00 pm in the Highland Veterans Cemetery by Susan Boice Howard, Town of Ipswich Officials and Agawam Gathering Group, before she takes her long journey.
